FAQ: Letters of Recommendation

I do write letters of recommendation (LOR) for highly qualified students.  This page tells you what I need.  I do not write a “blanket” (general, non-specific) letter of recommendation.  I write for the specific school (or centralized service), program and current application term.  You need to give me 4-6 weeks’ notice, especially in high-volume periods.

BASICS
Remind me who you are – especially if you’re not a student in my current term.  At least I need which school and what class you were in.  If you have the CRN or Ticket Number, give that to me too – that’ll help!

DETAILS
  • What program is it for?  What program(s) are you applying for and where at?
  • What are the deadlines?  Is it a paper or electronic submission?  Do they use a centralized application service, like PharmCAS or PTCAS?

EXTRAS
While the following are optional, the more you give me the better.  I do read what you give me to craft the LOR.  Past students have provided me with their:
  • Resume
  • Transcript(s)
  • Personal Statement
If there is a theme, or something you want me to say, do let me know.  It doesn’t mean I’ll say it, but I’ll consider it.  It also helps your application when the LOR shows you and I have communicated by saying similar things that you say elsewhere, like in your personal statement.
