Orientation Learning Style
One of the things we quickly find out in the challenging courses in Biology I teach is that students can study more efficiently if they know their learning style. There’s not enough time now to read, do, and re-read and re-do the material. You may only have one time to grasp it – what’s the best way for you?
That’s where learning style comes in. While there are many variants, I prescribe to these top three:
(These links below are being re-evaluated)...Here are a few resources to determine your learning style:
I like the first one especially. The others I found when I googled learning styles. Let me know which sites you like/hate – I’ll remove the ones you think that suck, because I think I have too many links here. I think they make this more complicated than it should be – most students are really either visual, kinesthetic or auditory, or a combination of these.

That’s where learning style comes in. While there are many variants, I prescribe to these top three:
- Visual – you remember what you see. On a test, you can see the picture that the question is asking about. You can see your notes or summary.
- Auditory – you hear me (or yourself) say the answer while you are taking the test. Many ESL (English-as-a-Second-Language) students are auditory. Some of you hear me in your sleep. Recording my lectures on your phone or voice recorder is helpful.
- Kinesthetic – you learn by doing. You must apply what we are learning, even if that just means teaching to someone else (before you feel you know it all).
(These links below are being re-evaluated)...Here are a few resources to determine your learning style:
- Accelerated Learning: What's MY personal Learning Style - This is the one I have in my notes that "I like." Don't remember why. http://www.acceleratedlearning.com/method/test_flash.html
- 20 questions from Education Planner - They have other self-assessments too, such as what kind of student are you and how strong is your character.... http://www.educationplanner.org/students/self-assessments/learning-styles-quiz.shtml
- The VARK Questionnaire - Choose the answer which best explains your preference and click the box next to it. Please click more than one if a single answer does not match your perception. Leave blank any question that does not apply. http://vark-learn.com/the-vark-questionnaire/
- Multiple Intelligences Assessment - This quiz asks 24 questions and will take less than five minutes to complete. Try not to think too hard -- just go with your first thought when describing your daily activities and interests. By the end, you may have some new insights into the way you think. http://www.edutopia.org/multiple-intelligences-assessment
- VAK Quest - I guess VAK stands for Visual Auditory Kinetic! “This questionnaire will help you discover what kind of learner you are.” - http://www.brainboxx.co.uk/a3_aspects/pages/vak_quest.htm
- Marcia Conner Learning Style - 12-question print and tally. http://marciaconner.com/assess/learningstyle/
- How to Learn Learning Styles Quiz - three steps... http://www.howtolearn.com/learning-styles-quiz/
- Graphical Results - go to the “free learning styles inventory (test),” halfway down on the page for the test - The learning styles inventory provides you with a guide to your own personal learning styles. By asking a series of questions and then scoring the results, it will illustrate your dominant and secondary learning styles.
- Says it's the only one that gives out results graphically. 70 questions?! http://www.learning-styles-online.com/
